About

The place, in context

Koh Lipe is one of the few inhabited islands deliberately carved out of a Thai national park. The water around it was not. Tarutao National Marine Park, declared in 1974, covers 51 islands and roughly 1,400 square kilometres of the Andaman Sea in Satun province, and its boundary runs right up to the village beaches. That single administrative line explains the shape of Koh Lipe Snorkeling Package tours: the reefs belong to the park, the longtail boats belong to the island, and the 200 THB conservation fee per foreign adult funds the first of those two. The island's first permanent families were Urak Lawoi, Austronesian sea people who settled here in the early twentieth century. Their presence became an argument of sovereignty during the Anglo-Siamese boundary negotiations of 1909, which fixed the frontier between Siam and British Malaya a few kilometres offshore. The same families fished the granite shoals that visitors now float above. Their descendants still crew much of the day-boat snorkel circuit, and the long-shafted longtail engine remains the working technology of the archipelago. Geology sets the character of the water. The Adang–Rawi group is granite, not limestone, so the coastline reads as rounded grey boulder and coarse pale sand rather than the sheer karst towers of Phang Nga. Coral grows on the sheltered flanks: branching Acropora in two to four metres off Koh Adang, gardens of soft coral on the submerged pinnacle at Jabang, fringing reef along the quieter east zone. Koh Hin Ngam is a shore of black striped stones and little else. Visibility on an island-hopping snorkel route regularly exceeds 15 metres in the morning. Blacktip reef sharks work the deeper margins; parrotfish are audible, grazing the hard coral. What the park now manages is a shallow-water system still recovering from the 2010 Andaman bleaching event, one of the most severe recorded in the region. Mooring buoys replaced anchors at the main sites. Rangers from the Department of National Parks patrol from Satun and the Adang station. Seen that way, Koh Lipe Snorkeling Package tickets are a conservation levy as much as a day afloat — the fee stays valid for five to seven days, and the park keeps a single schedule, 08:30–16:00, seven days a week.

"The reefs belong to the park, the longtail boats belong to the island."
Your experience

What a tour day looks like

A step-by-step walkthrough of the visit — what you'll see, how long each stage takes, and the details that matter.

You walk down to the beach while the sand is still cool and the longtail engines are still tilted clear of the water. A boatman hands you a mask, a snorkel, fins and a numbered float ring, then you wade in thigh-deep and climb over the gunwale — there is no pier, and your dry bag goes under the bench. The shaft drops, the engine coughs, and the hull starts slapping east. The first stop is a drift over hard coral in three metres of water, clear enough that you can read the shadow of the boat on the seabed. You roll in backwards. Parrotfish click somewhere behind you. You follow the reef edge with your hands flat against your chest, touching nothing. Back aboard, you drink from the cooler and feel salt drying tight across your shoulders. At Jabang you stay near the mooring line, because the current runs and the pinnacle climbs out of deep water in a column of pink and orange soft coral. Later you step onto Koh Hin Ngam and walk on black stones that clack underfoot. A Koh Lipe Snorkeling Package tour usually closes with a slow run home through the channel between Adang and Rawi, where you sit forward of the engine, rinse your mask one last time, and watch the island's low green ridge return. Boats load from 08:30, and the water you see then is the clearest you will get.
